Zion’s first few episodes preparing meals and serving them to the men at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church’s homeless shelter in Paterson have been successes.

We owe a big “Thank You” to everyone who contributed money or food, who cooked the meals, who served them and who hung out with the residents and visited.

We are trying new recipes for means that the shelter’s director told us are popular and easy to prepare.

Our confidence in our cooking prowess has increased since we figured out how to turn the oven temperature up.

The first time we did this, after we got everything together, we caravanned to Paterson in two vehicles and got there in time to set ourselves up with some composure. There was more than enough food for everyone there, and we enjoyed conversations with the Roland (a shirttail relative of John Gotti) and two other men who complimented Phil on his Spanish and compared predictions about the upcoming football season. It turns out that Phil met Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger (of the movie “Rudy) via Phil’s brother when the latter went to Notre Dame.

We are looking forward to getting to know these men better during our successive trips there. Please let us know if you are willing to join us one of these times or help out in any way.  This includes children, who are welcome in the kitchen and are permitted to come with us to the shelter if accompanied by parents.
